The Dew Scatterer

That would be me, Stanzi Rand McGlynn.

Originally from Lake Placid, New York (Yes, home of the 1980 Olympic ‘Miracle on Ice’ and no, not home to man-eating crocodiles), I went to high school in Montoursville, Pennsylvania, and recently graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY with a double major in Economics and Fine Arts and a minor in African Studies.

I’ve been meaning to start a blog for quite some time now, but please, bear with me, this is my first and my technological savvy does not extend to things like this typically!  I’m mainly utilizing this to express opinions, keep friends and family updated, post my artwork, and ramble about my life, of course.

All opinions and links expressed and posted here are explicitly of my own creation and/or reference and do not reflect the positions, views, or intents of any organization, particularly the U.S. Government or the United States Peace Corps.

I currently waitress in Lake Placid where I am an avid skiier, runner, hiker, and extremely appreciative resident of the Adirondacks.  This past summer in 2010, I interned with a non-profit organization called The BOMA Fund that works doing small business development in Northern Kenya, where I previously studied abroad for four months in 2009.  I am highly interested in pursuing a career in International Development someday and in June I will take my first steps toward pursuing this interest when I begin training as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal as a Small Enterprise Development Trainer.

Things I like to do or am interested in include reading, writing, photography, soccer, traveling, Chance by Chanel, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, sushi, iced hazelnut coffee from DD’s, Kenya, Africa, sleeping, sunflowers, hiking, the ADKs, memorable quotes, good laughs, and good friends, among many other random things.

The title of this blog is inspired by a favorite quote of mine by the late, and great, Hunter S. Thompson who put it so eloquently that “The person who doesn’t scatter the morning dew will not comb grey hairs” (I do believe he borrowed this from a traditional Irish Proverb, however, when Hunter S. Thompson said anything, he damn well was remembered for saying it first).

Not that I want grey hairs anytime soon… but you get the picture.  Whoever you are, please feel free to comment on my posts, I would love to hear any feedback about my writing and/or subject matter, particularly if you are, like me, currently applying to the Peace Corps or are a current or RPCV (Returned Peace Corps Volunteer).  Any and all advice and commentary is appreciated!

Cheers and thanks for reading!

  1. Congratulations on a great blog startup! LUV Dad

  2. So in other words, ya need to jump out of bed and suck the marrow outta life every early a.m. before the sun blasts the dew away. And you know the sun comes up later for us northern or ski mtn dwellers…so you have earned a bit of sleep-in time after your hard earned success in school. Birk will follow your blog and email you from time to time, this 11 year old home schooler cuz needs your inspiration. Read one of your letters from Kenya-you write beautifully. Safety first, the old USA may be domestically violent but don’t be the gullible traveler either as you venture beyond in apparently mellow communities. Wasn’t hearing Sergeant Shriver’s bio just amazing-now that is a bucket list of “nation (and planet) building” (Obama’s speech). Tell your dad we’d welcome ‘life’ coach level comments from time to time directed to Birk from his uncle. Needs the diversity coming from Lower 48. Eileen via Birk’s address

  3. How very true! Wise words from Aunt Eileen! And I never realized how contradictory my earlier post about not being a morning person was for the whole theme of my blog, haha. I definitely have been taking advantage of my new sleep-in time after school, completely deserved, but slowly realizing, maybe this is a habit that needs to be kicked! Especially with our ski conditions back East right now… powder at Whiteface tomorrow? Yes, it’s for real.

Sargeant Shriver was an absolutely amazing guy, a big loss indeed and a life to aspire to! Tell Birk I have bookmarked his blog and will check it out regularly! Hope all is well out in Alaska, great to hear from you.
